Dissolution of Parliament - To all whom it may concern
02/01/2006
This amusing advert for Shaws Celebrated Black Pudding, unceremoniously pokes fun at the political situation of the day, by mimicking an official government decree, announcing the dissolution of parliament in 1909.
On closer examination the copy reveals that… “Whereas the date on which the Government will resign is still a matter of doubt, it is admitted as absolutely certain that there is no better Breakfast Food than Shaws Celebrated Black Pudding.” The question remains not whether Shaws Breakfast Puddings are as tasty and full flavoured today, but what this advert would have said about our modern politicians… Proof once more that… There’s nothing surer than Shaws!
Further down the page is an early example of a consumer sales promotion announcing that 20 persons in each of the four provinces who return the most Shaws Pudding Labels by a given date will receive a ham for their efforts. Rather charmingly the number of labels has to be specified in the correspondence as well as the labels themselves!
