William Shaw had a strong belief in never disappointing his customers. Putting pen to paper one day he created a maxim known as The Shaws Way, for his employees to remember as they went about their work, whether that was preparing meats or serving his customers at the counter.
The Shaws Way.

“I know of no other yardstick of care in the preparation and selection of quality meats, for the provision of fine fare on behalf of its customers, save those exacting standards employed by W.J. Shaw & Sons. There is but one way to ensure their satisfaction and that is The Shaws Way…”
W.J Shaw, 1831
Within the context of the 19th century Ireland, the death of William Shaw is recorded with a charm and respect by the Limerick Chronicle Obituary Column. Dec. 2nd, 1869
William John Shaw Esq. 1809-1869
It is with the deepest regret that we announce the demise of this estimable gentleman, which took place at an early hour this morning at his own residence and which while afflicting an attached family with intense grief, will at the same time excite the deepest regret throughout the community.
Mr Shaw, though a native of the north, resided for many years in Limerick where he carried on the provision trade on an extended scale and he had the reputation of being one of the most enterprising merchants in the south of Ireland.
His loss is greatly to be deplored, but it will be pleasurable to know that the void created thereby will in some measure be filled by his sons who succeed him in the trade and possess a great deal of his energy and business habits. He was a member of the Harbour board and Chamber of Commerce for many years; and by those in his employment – who are many – he was greatly loved.
